How it works under the hood

The Underlined styles here use the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (U+1D400–U+1D7FF), which contains bold, italic, and bold-italic variants of the Latin alphabet. Unicode also provides combining characters like the combining solidus overlay (U+0338) and combining macron below (U+0331) for additional emphasis effects. Because these are Unicode characters rather than rich-text formatting, they paste cleanly into apps that strip HTML and CSS.
